The Creepy Reimagining of “Peter Pan” Signs Ben Hibon to Direct

With the success of Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” and the impending release of Catherine Hardwicke’s dark retelling of “Red Riding Hood,” Hollywood is finding that audiences eat-up the sinister versions of classic fairy tales. Putting a shadowy twist on the stories that built Walt Disney an empire appeals to adults who have outgrown the naivety of these gems, and the box office numbers convey that.

Swiss director Ben Hibon is slated to direct the latest dark remake of a children’s tale, “Peter Pan.” The plot follows Captain Hook as a “haunted former police detective in pursuit of a childlike kidnapper.”

I guess we’re about to find out how Peter Pan collected so many lost boys.

Guillermo del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth”) was originally attached to direct the most recent take on the J.M. Barrie classic story but the project stalled, and sat in limbo for the last four years. Hibon, who oversaw an animated segment in the latest box office buster “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1,” is now resurrecting the project. Before his involvement with “Deathly Hallows,” Hibon was known for his award-winning short animated film “Codehunters” and the video game “Killer7.”

Casting for “Pan” is in progress with the shoot to begin next fall in Europe.
