Danny Boyle’s “Frankenstein” Play to be Screened in Theaters

Movie News

After scoring the greatest success of his career with “Slumdog Millionaire” and earning another Best Picture nomination with “127 Hours,” it’s a bit shocking to hear that director Danny Boyle is working on a stage production of “Frankenstein.” However, he did direct “28 Days Later,” so the horror genre is not exactly foreign to him, and with possible plans for another installment in that franchise being developed, maybe he’s turning away from the Oscar fare to focus on fun projects like this one.

While dedicated fans of Boyle may be unhappy that his involvement with this current project will prevent him from releasing a new film anytime soon, /Film reports that his production of “Frankenstein” will be screened in 375 theaters around the world, and 85 in the United States on March 17.

Boyle enthusiasts should make their best attempt to catch this very special event. His signature cinematic style involves kinetic camera-movement and rapid-fire editing; it will be interesting to see how he handles a stage project like this one. Even the video of it won’t be able to capture his frantic approach to filmmaking.

The fact that he’s willing to spend time on this kind of production is a good sign, though. It indicates that he’s still interested in challenging himself creatively, instead of becoming complacent and accepting a formula that clearly works.

However, the /Film articles does mention that Boyle might be looking to work on a werewolf picture in the future. “Frankenstein” sounds interesting, but we would love to see what he could do with that subject matter.
