“Mars Needs Moms”

Movie Trailer Review

By our guest blogger, Joe Oliveto

Uhhh, ok. And the award for Most Baffling Trailer of the Year goes to, well, this one.

Featuring CGI humans that give new meaning to the phrase “uncanny valley” and a vaguely decipherable plot, we really don’t know what to make of this one.

OK, so the plot is somewhat clear. Some generically bratty kid has a generically predictable fight with his mom, who ends up getting abducted by Martians, and uh, he travels to Mars to save here. So, we think we got that right.

What’s less clear is what kind of movie we are supposed to be looking for with this one. Is it a comedy? A children’s action film? A two-hour exploration of some writer’s bad drug trip? We’re not exactly sure. There’s too much going on in the trailer to figure out what we’re supposed to be looking for. The animation is impressive and the colors are certainly, well, abundant, but in terms of story, we’re not sure this one will hold up. The folks at Pixar know that the heart of the movie is the characters. This looks like it is going to rely entirely on plot.

Oh, and what is with that rap song playing throughout the entire trailer? Is that supposed to draw in the film’s target demographic? Is that what the kids are listening to these days?

We need to put professionalism aside--this trailer was weird.
