Stephen Colbert to Perform in Sondheim Musical

Stage News

Although he’s best known for the ultra right-wing role he plays on TV’s “The Colbert Report,” it just so happens that Stephen Colbert can sing and dance, too. While the persona he has adopted for television would likely disapprove of musical theater, Colbert himself has a genuine talent for it, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, he’ll be showing off his skills this spring in the New York Philharmonic’s production of Stephen Sondheim’s “Company.”

Colbert will take on the role of Harry, playing second-string to Neil Patrick Harris, whose career revival started when he made a cameo in “Harold and Kumar go to White Castle” and has been cemented in place since he took on a role in the popular sitcom “How I Met Your Mother.”

None of this should be too difficult for Colbert. His work on “The Colbert Report” is very often theatrical in its very nature, and unlike Jon Stewart, who can thankfully deliver his brand of “fake news” with honest outrage, Colbert must is acting for every moment that the camera is rolling. While he may not be the next great dramatic actor, he’s certainly got a lot of skill as an over-the-top performer.

The production will run from April 7 to 9 in New York’s Avery Fisher Hall, so be sure to get tickets while they’re available.
