“Fast Five”

Movie Trailer Review

By our guest blogger, Joe Oliveto

We’re pretty sure that no one goes into a movie like “Fast Five” expecting subtlety. And, judging by the trailer, that’s not what they’ll be getting. The cars are fast, the women are good-looking, and the actors are Vin Diesel and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. “The Godfather,” this ain’t.

Still, if you’re looking for a fun night out at the movies this April, “Fast Five” might just suffice. From the looks of it, the action scenes are going to be almost as ridiculous as the infamous tank scene from the recent reboot of “The A-Team,” but sometimes that’s acceptable, as long as you’re not expecting a movie that will stay with you once the credits roll.

What is important, though, is that the filmmakers embrace the fact that their movie isn’t the kind that audiences should take seriously. If the people behind the camera are trying to make us believe that these stunts don’t defy physics and that The Rock can actually act, we’ll be laughing at the movie.

If, on the other hand, everyone involved accepts the idea that these movies are the epitome of dumb, loud, in your face popcorn entertainment with no redeeming artistic values, then we’ll be happily laughing with them. There’s a reason why we can appreciate an action scene in “Hot Fuzz” and hate a nearly identical one in a Michael Bay picture; one of them loves the fact that it is just goofy fun, whereas the other tries to deny that fact. “Fast Five” won’t be as obviously satirical as an Edgar Wright picture, but it could benefit from a sense of humor.

From the trailer, we can’t tell if it has that going for it, but we’d like to believe so. This might be the first movie in this franchise worth seeing since, well, ever.
