“The Three Musketeers”

Movie Trailer Review

By our guest blogger, Joe Oliveto

Ah, we’re certainly conflicted about this one. While we’d support nearly any project that Christoph Waltz involved himself in after “Inglourious Basterds,” and we’re intrigued by any movie that has Mads Mikkelsen in the credits, we can’t forget that Paul W.S. Andersion is directing this film. The same Paul W.S. Anderson whose credits include “Mortal Kombat,” “Resident Evil” and “Alien vs. Predator.”

If Uwe Boll ever had any competition for the title of Worst Filmmaker Working Today, Anderson would be it.

And honestly, by the looks of this trailer, it doesn’t seem that we can expect anything better from the director this time around. Sure, the picture looks as though it will be filled with the kind of swashbuckling action that one hopes for in a Three Musketeers movie, but we get the sense that there’s no real drama in the film. It seems as though the movie exists simply to show off its set pieces.

Now, that’s not always a bad thing; films like “Raiders of the Lost Ark” feature paper-thin plots that exist as an excuse to get to the action. However, whereas “Raiders of the Lost Ark” stands the test of time thanks to a healthy dose of humor and fun, from the trailer alone, it doesn’t seem as though “The Three Musketeers” has anything going for it aside from some slightly exciting sword-fights. That may be enough to attract some viewers to the theater, but with someone like Paul W.S. Anderson behind this project, we think we’ll steer clear.
