Movie News

Deadline reports that the American Film Institute recently announced their official selections for the AFI Awards, celebrating the best in film and television from the past year. The choices are meant to represent the movies and shows which best exemplified the potential of their respective mediums and furthered the public’s appreciation of cinema. The winners are as follows:
AFI MOVIES OF THE YEAR
BLACK SWAN
THE FIGHTER
INCEPTION
THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT
127 HOURS
THE SOCIAL NETWORK
THE TOWN
TOY STORY 3
TRUE GRIT
WINTER'S BONE
AFI TV PROGRAMS OF THE YEAR
THE BIG C
BOARDWALK EMPIRE
BREAKING BAD
GLEE
MAD MEN
MODERN FAMILY
THE PACIFIC
TEMPLE GRANDIN
30 ROCK
THE WALKING DEAD
AFI SPECIAL AWARDS
THE KING'S SPEECH
WAITING FOR SUPERMAN
No big surprises there. The selections for both film and TV were critically acclaimed this past year; there’s not a wild card in the bunch, with the possible exception of “The Kids Are All Right.”
Now that the Oscars will be nominating ten films for Best Picture, it will be interesting to see how the Academy’s list matches up with AFI’s. In a year where most can agree on which films were the best, we doubt there’ll be too much variation, although at this pint there’s no clear contender for the win. “The Social Network” was the best reviewed film of the year, but both “127 Hours” and “Black Swan” are getting some serious praise as well.
It will probably come down to Fincher and Aronofsky, as neither has won a major award yet despite being hailed as two of the best filmmakers working today. As awards season approaches, we’ll be able to get a better sense of who has the best shot at winning the big prize.
