Daft Punk "Derezzed"

Music Video Review

By our guest blogger, Nick Hanover

Can we take a moment to just contemplate how freaking cool Daft Punk is? Seriously. The electronic duo haven't released a proper album since 2005's notoriously poorly received "Human After All" and yet even that did little to dent their reputation. Now they're scoring a Disney film that just happens to be a decades removed sequel to a notorious cult classic: "Tron."

"Tron: Legacy" may be a watered down, boring retread of the original but you can't fault Daft Punk. "Derezzed" is basically just an audio appetizer of the full score but it's three minutes of banging excitement nonetheless. As Daft Punk walk into some old bar and throw their quarters into a dusty Derezzed cabinet, we get a glimpse at the Tron world while Daft Punk's blazing soundtrack plays. It'd be a great advertisement for the film except for one little thing--"Tron: Legacy" would be so much better if it was all Daft Punk, all the time.

Hear me out. Does anyone watch the original "Tron" because of the story? Or acting? Of course not. Is anyone going to watch the new "Tron" for those things? Hell, no. What the average "Tron" viewer wants is those trippy visuals and some effective music. So, why not just release a "Tron" sequel that has the Daft Punk boys tearing through a binary world, obliterating things with their beats? I know this is the movie I wanted "Tron: Legacy" to be, rather than the bloated mess it actually is.

Take a glimpse at "Derezzed" and tell me I'm wrong. Better yet, go back and watch other Daft Punk classics like "Around the World" or "Technologic" or even "Robot Rock." and tell me that you don't think letting those freaky helmeted cyborgs take over the "Tron" franchise would be a smart move. Disney could at least offer this up as a bonus treat on the inevitable Collector's Edition Blu-ray.
