Chloe Sevigny is accustomed to starring in films featuring maniacal killers. “Zodiac.” “American Psycho.”
However, according to Deadline, she’ll soon be playing one in an HBO miniseries based on the infamous case of Lizzie Borden, who murdered her father and step-mother with a hatchet, and, thanks to a poor legal system, got away with it. The miniseries is set to be four hours long and will likely involve details of the trial.
In other hands, this project could easily become too sensationalistic, but we trust HBO to deliver a quality product. They have time and again produced some of the greatest television ever broadcast, and while this may not stand up there with other TV milestones, it could earn itself a few Emmies or Golden Globes in the future, particularly for Sevigny, who will be given the difficult task of portraying a murderer convincingly without falling into caricature. The fact that Borden isn’t exactly around to interview will make the process that much harder. If Sevigny can pull it off, it could be the performance of her career.
The actual miniseries is still far away, but we’re looking forward to this one. The material is interesting—we’re surprised there weren’t any major adaptations of this story made earlier—and the people bringing it to us are talented. It should make for some interesting television.
