The legend goes like this--a man throws a coin into this fountain, allegedly a "fountain of love." This man will immediately be in love with any woman that takes his coin from the fountain.

"When in Rome," the new romantic comedy oddly coming from Mark Steven Johnson, director of "Daredevil" and "Ghost Rider," follows Beth Harper (Kristen Bell), a single art curator who goes to Rome for her sister's wedding, finds herself low on cash one night, and jumps into this fountain of love to grab some change. She takes five coins, and so is then followed back to the States by five suitors--a street magician (Jon Heder of "Napoleon Dynamite"), a self-absorbed male model (Dax Shepard), an artist (Will Arnett), Danny DeVito (I don't quite know what his career is supposed to be), and Nick (Josh Duhamel), the handsome and charming best man at the wedding who may or may not actually be one of the fountain's suitors and may just be legitimately interested in Beth.

As uninteresting as this whole premise is to me, the cast is decent enough, and the various shenanigans each causes in an attempt to woo Beth are reasonably inventive and amusing. Overall, though, there doesn't seem to be much going on, and watching a bunch of men go crazy over Kristen Bell for 90 minutes doesn't really sound like a great time to me. This is obviously a film more aimed at women, and I imagine they may get a bit more enjoyment out of the whole fantasy.

"When in Rome" will be released January 29, 2010.
