Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’ Music Video Review
Music Video Review

Relentlessly upbeat and light-hearted, Katy Perry’s hit single ‘California Gurls’ has become 2010’s quintessential summer jam. The infectious tune can be heard playing on radio stations, in bars and clubs, and at beach parties across the country, and with good reason. Perry always has excelled at producing songs that get stuck in your head for weeks on end (see also: “I Kissed A Girl” and “Hot ‘N Cold”), and ‘California Gurls’ is no exception. It’s been a big year for Katy--following a slew of hit singles, the bubbly songstress got engaged to British comedian Russell Brand last January while on vacation in India.
I applaud Katy for going against the grain and doing something unexpected for the ‘California Gurls’ video. It would have been easy to do a beach-themed video and call it a day--but that would have been a rookie move, and by now Perry is a seasoned veteran. Instead, Katy opts for a Candyland-themed video, which sounds slightly absurd but actually complements the song fantastically. Scenic California beaches have nothing on this fantasy land, complete with cotton candy clouds, ice cream sundae mountains, peppermint-stick serpents, and last but certainly not least, Snoop Dogg (featured in the song) dressed to the nines in an cupcake-printed suit.
Despite the sugary-sweet theme of the video, Perry is wise enough to bring the spice. The rebellious gummy bear in the beginning of the video who flipped Katy the middle finger prompted John Leonardo, senior brand of Trolli Gummi Bears, to release a statement: “Those are definitely not Trolli Gummi bears in the video because Trolli Gummi Bears would never be that rude. Trolli bears would extend their chubby little arms and give Katy a big old bear hug and whisper, 'Everything is going to be alright.’” Well, okay John. Thanks for the update on the delicate gummy bear psyche.
Angry gummy bears aside, ‘California Gurls’ is a hit. With her sassy candy-themed costumes and pastel-colored locks, Katy (with a little help from Snoop, Candyland’s resident sugar daddy) gets it right once again. I eagerly look forward to what this California Gurl does next.
