Broken Social Scene "Texico Bitches" Music Video Review
Music Video Review

I can honestly say I never expected to associate Canadian supergroup Broken Social Scene with sweaty oil wrestling. And yet here we are, with the clip for "Texico Bitches" in all its glory, looking like "There Will Be Blood" as interpreted by characters from "The Wrestler."
Honestly, the video is a bit of a mismatch for the song, which sounds like some effortlessly breezy summer pop. For the video to work, it would need to be set to something far more pulse-pounding, like, say, this. Or maybe whatever Mastodon's up to these days. As it stands, the relative innocence of the track itself is jarring when paired with the comically physical actions on display in the video. There's reason to believe that BSS are in on the joke and intended this juxtaposition, since the video quickly pours on the unexpected.
Well, slightly unexpected, I should say. You see, this particular ol' oil wrestling match doesn't just appear to be a homoerotic spectacle barely disguised as the most manly of throwdowns--it is. Our two contenders seem to be well-supported by their fans on the red and blue teams, but they came for blood and sweat and mostly just get the latter. A little over halfway into the song, one of the wrestlers makes a grab below the belt and soon the events are playing out quite differently than one might have predicted.
Most of the fans walk away disappointed (except for that creepy clown faced guy--I'd avoid meeting him after the match, boys) as the wrestlers become further and further distracted by each other's embraces and the explosions of oil hitting their chests and faces. They eventually collapse in a lovable heap and have the field to themselves. Maybe it's a comment on what wrestling's all about or maybe it's urging oil mongers to just give in and love each other already. Whatever the case, I'm willing to bet those two lovebirds went and got a milkshake afterwards.
