"Dear John" Movie Trailer Review

Anything based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks either makes women simultaneously weep and run to the theater or has men running in the opposite direction. This is usually due to the melodramatic, sappy works he puts out, such as "A Walk To Remember" and every girl’s favorite, "The Notebook." Don’t get me wrong, I adore these films just as much as the next person--but you take them for what they’re worth.

With the film "Dear John," based on the novel of the same name by Sparks and directed by Lasse Hallstrom, you have a trailer that actually shows the potential for a beautiful and, more importantly, convincing love story. Starring as the two main lovers, we have eye-candy Channing Tatum, who apparently wants to prove he can do more than two-step, and the always adorable and completely underrated Amanda Seyfried.

Here, she’s the homely conservative goody two shoes and he’s the bad boy who everyone in town is intimidated by. Naturally, they fall for each other and BAM--in two weeks, they’re in love. But wait! John has to go back to the Army and Seyfried’s character is left in pieces. Are you as shocked as I am? Didn’t think so. But here is what is working in the trailer-the two leads have chemistry. I don’t know if it was the Lillith Fair music playing during the trailer or if the theater was just freezing because at one point, I had chills.

This is sure to be a huge tear jerker, with the two exchanging letters back and forth while he’s on leave and she’s left waiting for him. Considering the state our country is in at the moment, this seems realistic. Also, Amanda Seyfried is an amazing talent who plays every role she is in to the fullest. Films like this usually hold no interest for me just because there have been so many of them, but "Dear John" seems to take on a somewhat different format.

Look for the movie to arrive in theaters February 5, 2010.

I totally agree. Perfectly thought out and written. I especially like the part where a male reviewer admits being a sap for this kind of movie. LOL! I too am a sucker for such things. Please kick me.

By the way, I have never heard of a trailer review! Cool.

BTW - That "Lillith Fair music" is actually Snow Patrol featuring Martha Wainwright.

It started out OK, then it dragged on WAY too long. Horrible ending and bad plot twist.
